How could we?

(for fenrixIX)

It’s in the word
he thinks
I know it
mired down there
under the muck
of lines and dots
these punctuations of weight

It’s too much sometimes
the atmosphere and its blue
the earth and its ochre
the red of the sun
its too much to get done

Still, in the murmuring
susurrant
rasping strident
then mute
dumb and stopped
before the monument of memory
we all fall in
the vagaries of testimony

Yet will I witness to it
my people I will preach
prophesy at once and in
all ways that there is no other
way for me but in the word

Where-from spans the bridge
across the chasm?
that will save us? that will
damn us, damn me
yet, from this side will
I holler to you standing
in the wind on that
other cliff teetering above
your heavy stone

You’ll turn to your friend and say
what? what
did he say? yes!
Until I am hoarse
with crying I will say “I thirst”
and still, despite the weight of it
gravity relentless over us
every action equal and opposite
I shall believe that we might
unearth it, together

Night song

I'm a bit at a loss again today:
Family, obligation, virtue, doubt, love, loss, death.
Here's what's come of it:

Under these stars
beneath these lights
we rip ourselves open
with all of our might
and all that holds silence
all that holds right
pours out itself
into us tonight

While under the moon
within this light
we pour out our words
we bleed out the night

Beneath these stars
under the night
we bind up our wounds
we bleed out delight
till all of our sorrows
rage blind and white
and stare us down then
we see without sight

While under the moon
within this light
we pour out our words
we bleed out the night

These ropes and barbed wire
these teeth that bite
in such caves of steel
grows love's stalactite
in falling, in failure
in slow born requite
waters bending to stone
re-framing the plight

While under the moon
within this light
we pour out our words
we bleed out the night

Love songs are easy, you are not

Into the darkness, into the light
I wanna see rainbows with you tonight
I watch the sun rise and the night fall
Light and darkness will cover us all
There's a fly on the window, a spider in the bed
Rainbows keep splashing over my head
Rainbows here, rainbows there
I wanna see rainbows everywhere

I waited for comfort, I longed for good news
I couldn't get rid of these missing you blues
Still sunspots are flaring, the heat's coming on
It's not just me who's limping along
Since I've been singing, since you've been gone
the clock has been caught ticking out this song
Rainbows here, rainbows there
I wanna see rainbows everywhere

I don't know just how this is going to end
I'll need pencil and paper to make amends
When Noah saw you hanging up in the sky
he whispered a thank you, rather than a why
But I'm not that certain, I'm a little on edge
my heart is hanging over the ledge
of you and me standing out in the rain
of you and me holding each other again
Out in the darkness, and in the light
I wanna see rainbows with you tonight
